A Wilson attorney and school board member is working to raise money for youth across the state.

In 2017, Gov. Roy Cooper appointed Rhyan Breen to the State Youth Advisory Council. Breen now serves as chairman for the council’s fundraising committee and is working with Richard Gower, the owner of Zaxby’s restaurants in Wilson and Goldsboro, to donate 10 percent of sales to the state advisory council from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.

“With the simple act of having dinner at Zaxby’s, Wilson residents can support teen leadership development at both the state and local levels,” said Theresa Mathis, adviser for the Wilson Youth Council. “Teens that participate in the Wilson Youth Council and attend the state leadership conferences develop skills such as team-building and decision-making, and they give back to the community by serving others. Both the state youth council and the local Wilson Youth Council are truly opportunities of leadership in action.”

Breen, who also represents District 7 on the Wilson County Board of Education, said he’s hoping to raise half of the annual $6,500 goal for the endowment on Tuesday. The endowment covers four conferences of about 150 teens each year.

The Wilson native said it’s imperative that everyone supports the development of today’s youth and their efforts to become better leaders.

“It is important for us to support efforts like this in Wilson and across the state because these youth councils undertake projects that improve the quality of life for the people in their area. These projects allow the students to become emotionally invested in their hometowns and help cultivate the next generation of local leaders,” Breen said. “Additionally these student leaders, who will eventually become our community and business leaders, have an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to take on those roles.”

Members of the Wilson Youth Council will be at the restaurant to greet customers and clear tables.

For those who cannot attend the fundraiser, Breen encouraged sending an email to candace.dudley@doa.nc.gov to find out how to donate to the endowment.
