When I was young, dentists always tried to get me to buy a mouthguard for sleep because I was bad about clenching (grinding) my teeth. I really, really wish I had!
My molars are all crowns or gone, most have had root canals. I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on my teeth. Most of it was due to the clenching (grinding). In my 50s or early 60s I decided to try to train myself to not clench. Every night, as I went to sleep I would say to myself, “slack jaw.” I would concentrate on that until I was asleep.
After a few weeks, I was waking up without pain in my temples from clenching and eventually realized that during the day my teeth didn’t touch. My jaw was slack. This has continued for years and I thought I should share that. If it worked for me — and continues years later — it is worth sharing.
Perhaps some readers will have the same results. To all clenchers/grinders I say, if you don’t or can’t train yourself to have a slack jaw, get a mouthguard. And use it!
