FARMVILLE — Behind some opportunistic base-running and solid pitching, Hunt High only needed three hits to get three runs and a 3-1 win over host Farmville Central in the varsity baseball season opener for both teams Wednesday.

The 3-A Big East Conference Warriors stole three bases and scored twice on infield singles while four Hunt hurlers scattered six hits against the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference Jaguars in the game that was originally scheduled at Hunt but moved due to muddy conditions at Sid Boyette Field.

“I wasn’t expecting a whole lot offensively,” Warriors head coach Jon Smith said. “We struck out seven times and we’ve got to cut back on that but we won the baserunning battle>

Senior Trey Dail, who scored all of Hunt’s runs, reached on an infield error in the second. He moved over on another Jaguars error and scored on junior Slade Rand’s single into the hole between first and second.

The Warriors tacked on another run in the top of the fourth when Dail drew a leadoff walk and Blake Daniels coaxed a one-out free pass. The runners moved up on a wild pitch before Dail came in on Patrick Clark’s sacrifice fly to center field.

Dail reached base again in the sixth on a fielder’s choice that erased Chase Waddell, who led off with a single. Dail then stole second and raced home on Daniels’ infield single to deep short.

Gavin Huff, a sophomore right-hander who was Hunt’s third pitcher, got the win by working 1 1/3 innings. He gave up one hit and walked one while striking out three.

Waddell came on in the bottom of the seventh to strike out both Farmville Central batters he faced to earn the save. Jarrett Aycock started and threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a base on balls while striking out two.

“It was good to get a win but honestly, I twas  great just to get outside and play baseball!” Smith said.

The Warriors visit C.B. Aycock on Thursday at 5 p.m.
