HICKORY — Sophomore all-conference first baseman Colby Warren slugged two home runs and drove in four runs to power the Barton College baseball team to its first 2019 win by a 9-4 margin against Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday.

The outcome left both teams with 1-3 records. The Bulldogs of second-year head coach Jim Chester were playing their fourth road contest before launching their home season on the Nixon Field diamond with a three-game series against Nyack (New York) College on Saturday and Sunday.

Warren connected for a three-run homer against starting pitcher Kain Kiser in the third inning and added a solo blast in the seventh.

Sophomore third baseman Gatlin Pate rapped two doubles and drove in two runs. Senior left fielder Hunter Pearre collected a pair of RBIs, and junior shortstop Jojo Allen doubled and scored twice.

The Bulldogs forged an 8-0 lead with three runs in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Starting Barton pitcher Connor Patterson, a freshman, blanked Lenoir-Rhyne through four innings, but failed to finish the fifth. Patterson allowed but one hit but was plagued by six walks. He struck out five.

Freshman Donovan Waitman, who relieved Patterson, picked up the win. Chase Long, a senior right-hander from Hunt High, and senior Troy Maslowski worked the last 2 2/3 innings.

Right fielder E.J. Ranel homered for Lenoir-Rhyne.
