ASHEBORO — Third baseman Colby Warren had already driven in a pair of runs to help his Barton baseball team to a 6-4 lead over Lenoir-Rhyne in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader at McCrary Park when Bulldogs head coach summoned the freshman from Roanoke Rapids to the mound in the top of the sixth inning.

With the tying run on base, Warren walked the first batter he faced before getting a groundout to end the inning. Warren survived a leadoff double by the Bears’ Alex Reynolds in the top of the seventh before retiring the next three batters to earn his first collegiate save and a split for the Bulldogs, who dropped the opener 9-3.

It was the first in three tries for Barton against Lenoir-Rhyne this season as the Conference Carolinas Bulldogs raised their record to 4-5. The South Atlantic Conference Bears departed 6-2.

Sophomore Chase Riker, who was 3 for 3, had an RBI single before Warren doubled in a run in the Bulldogs’ three-run first. Warren and fellow freshman Tate Proctor each singled in a run in the bottom of the fifth to put Barton ahead 6-2. Sophomore shortstop Gatlin Pate was 2 for 2 and scored three runs.

Sophomore starting right-hander Landry Moore went four innings to garner his first victory for Barton. He gave up two runs on two hits and two walks before yielding to Ryan Pifer, who was replaced by Warren.

In the first game, Barton took a 2-0 lead with a couple of unearned runs in the top of the second inning. However, the Bears tagged Bulldogs starter Clay Walters (0-1) for a run in the bottom of the inning and four more in the third. LRU tacked on two more runs in the fourth off Barton reliever Jabe Montgomery.

Warren drilled his first career home run, a solo shot in the sixth inning. He and sophomore Noah Almond each had two hits.

Barton will host Div. II Mercy (New York) College for a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, beginning at noon each day.
