Vinson’s scamper gives CBA walk-off win

PIKEVILLE — Senior Connor Vinson darted home on junior Cassandra Lassiter’s groundout Thursday night and slid under the tag to lift the Charles B. Aycock High varsity softball team to a wild, come-from-behind 11-10 victory over nonconference opponent North Johnston.

Once trailing by margins of 4-0 and 10-5, 3-A CBA of the split 3-A/4-A Eastern Carolina Conference sliced away at the margin behind the bat of junior Hannah Vinson.

Hannah Vinson and senior Allison Shingleton had run-scoring hits in the fourth inning to help pull the Lady Golden Falcons within 10-8, and Hannah Vinson’s two-run single in the bottom of the fifth enabled CBA (5-0) to tie it at 10.

Hannah Vinson, who finished 3 for 3 with five RBIs, also added a two-run double with the bases loaded in the second.

With both teams experiencing defensive adventures — each team committed three errors — CBA used the final miscue from the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference Lady Panthers (3-3) to secure the walk-off with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Connor Vinson opened the inning with a bunt-and-slash to induce a North Johnston error and was awarded second base on an interference. Senior Mookie Powell bunted her over to third, setting up Lassiter’s at-bat. With North Johnston’s infield playing at normal depth, Lassiter’s ground ball to shortstop was relayed home, but Connor Vinson slid under the tag to end the game.

Right-hander Taylor Waddell earned the win in relief for CBA after entering in the third inning for Shingleton. She allowed five hits, striking out five and walking seven. Sophomore Amberlynn Pearce pitched the duration for North Johnston and only five of her 11 runs were earned.

CBA had a 14-10 advantage in hits, led by Vinson’s spree. Lassiter and Powell each had three hits, with Lassiter driving in three runs. Connor Vinson was 2 for 4. Shingleton had an RBI double in the second.

For North Johnston, sophomore Lindsey Massengill, sophomore Hannah Wall and senior Taylor Narron each had two hits. Massengill and Narron each doubled.

CBA hosts Southern Wayne on Thursday to open ECC play as North Johnston visits Corinth Holders.
