The bulk of the Wilson County Tourism Development Authority Board of Directors’ May meeting centered around allocating $225,179 to a Raleigh-based branding agency.

Clean was hired in 2017 to create a marketing campaign for the area, which launched in the fall and included a new website in April. Dennis Johnson, general manager of Comfort Suites and chairman of the board, said everyone has received positive feedback and response to the campaign.

“Overall, the board and I wanted to continue with the momentum and focus on really putting Wilson on the map with another year of strong marketing details with a presence being felt in various forms including digital, print, social and search,” Johnson said.

Since the campaign was launched in October, Wilson has had more than 4.2 million impressions, including 1.9 million in April alone. Facebook is the largest social media for Wilson tourism with a 171% increase in post reach and a 317% uptick in post engagement in April.

Also during the May 14 meeting, members received a binder full of funding requests for nonprofit organizations and special events. In June, the board will weed through the requests and allocate $175,000 between various organizations.

“We want to help promote all things Wilson, so we want to share in the success of the community projects and events,” Johnson said. “All these opportunities happen because of people’s interests. If we can help market them in a way that will benefit their organization and the community, then we have done our part by driving the visitor to Wilson.”
