Wilson County Sheriff’s Office officials are on the scene in Elm City, where a tornado apparently touched down this morning just after 7 a.m.
Reporter Drew Wilson is in the town limits of Elm City and reports trees are down on houses and power lines in the area of Wilson, Leo, Main and Barnes streets.
The Times is also hearing reports of damage outside town limits as well.
Wilson said Wilson County Schools officials are checking Fredrick Douglass Elementary School for damage at this time. The school is about two blocks from the apparent path, he said.
National Guard personnel are on the scene as well to help out.
National Weather Service meteorologist Jonathan Blaes says based on signal reports, it looks as if a tornado touched down around 7:07 a.m. in the Elm City area. NWS staff will be out in coming days to do a damage survey and to confirm, he said.
