MOREHEAD CITY — The second-half skid for the Wilson Tobs summer collegiate baseball team reached four games with a lightning-shortened 7-3 Coastal Plain League loss to the Morehead City Marlins on Saturday evening.

When the Tobs came to bat in the top of the seventh inning, lightning was spotted and the mandatory 30-minute wait was enforced. More lightning before the 30 minutes expired resulted in the contest being halted.

Wilson, the occupant of the East Division basement, plunged to 2-6 in second-half action and stands 11-25 on the summer.

After taking Sunday off, Wilson returns to action at Holly Springs on Monday evening and next plays at home in Fleming Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday against the Fayetteville SwampDogs, first-half winners in the East Division.

The Tobs fell behind 3-0. Starting pitcher Brett Morrison (0-1) was roughed up for eight hits and six earned runs in four-plus innings. Morrison did not issue a walk and struck out one.

The Marlins opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on Chandler Corley’s solo home run. Corley added a run-scoring single in the second and, in the same inning, Sammy Miller hit a sacrifice fly.

Wilson trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth. Zach Smith’s ground out scored Carson McCurdy.

But the Marlins answered with two runs in their half of the fourth. Daulton Weeks hammered a run-scoring double and Alex Wilson singled home Weeks.

The Tobs cut the deficit to 5-3 in the top of the fifth as Shane Shepard belted his team-leading fifth homer. The blast to left-center field against Marlins reliever Will Matthieson scored Brady Lloyd.

The Marlins’ Randy Perez then ended the scoring with a two-run homer against Tobs reliever Hank Simpson in the fifth.
