Tobs clipped 6-5 at Peninsula before break

HAMPTON, Va. — The Wilson Tobs went into the Coastal Plain League All-Star Showdown break with back-to-back losses after the host Peninsula Pilots notched a 6-5 walk-off North Division win Saturday night.

Coming off a 6-4 defeat at Martinsville on Friday night, Wilson, the first-half North Division winner, dropped to 16-14 overall and to 2-3 in second-half action. Peninsula improved to 16-15 and 3-2, respectively.

The Tobs, with the exception of their five all-star selections and head coach Bryan Hill, do not play again until Thursday, July 11, when they welcome the Asheboro Copperheads of the West Division at Fleming Stadium.

All-star events are scheduled for Sunday and Monday in Savannah, Georgia. Hill is the head coach for the North Division All-Stars and his roster includes Wilson players Nate Fiala, DeShawn Lookout, Hunter Gore, Michael Calamari and Jimmy Sharkey.

On Saturday, the Pilots walked off with a run in the bottom of the ninth against Wilson reliever C.J. Gonzales.

Peninsula’s Nick Gonzalez doubled with one out and  scampered home with the walk-off runwhen Sy Snedeker, the next batter, rapped a run-scoring single.

Gonzales suffered his fourth loss against one win. Pilots reliever David Erickson, who blanked the Tobs the last two innings, earned his second win against as many losses.

Wilson took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, when Chris Meyers and Marquise Lanier each delivered RBI grounders.

The Pilots evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. Snedeker singled in a run and Drew Ashley collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Wilson reclaimed the lead at 4-2 in the fourth. Christian Avant drilled a run-scoring triple and scored on Kevin Jordan’s sacrifice fly.

The Pilots cut the deficit to 4-3 their half of the fourth on Kyle Battle’s sacrifice fly.

Peninsula seized a 5-4 lead with two runs in the fifth against starting Wilson pitcher Nick Hollas. Nick Biddison and Tommy Bell each laced RBI singles.

Wilson drew even at 5-5 in the seventh against starting Peninsula pitcher Ryan Devine on a balk that allowed Jordan to score.

Following Hollas’ departure after five innings, the Tobs got a scoreless inning of relief from Jakob Ryan, a junior from Barton College; Josh Arnold and Josh Siegligtz. Ryan was making his debut, while Arnold survived three hits in the seventh.

Meyers and Avant each batted 2 for 4 for the Tobs. Meyers doubled twice.

For Peninsula, Snedeker went 3 for 3, while Gonzalez was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three runs scored.
