MOREHEAD CITY — The bats of the Wilson Tobs were largely kept in check on the road Monday night as a two-run homer from Dawnoven Smith in the ninth inning provided all of Wilson’s scoring on the way to a 10-2 loss at the hands of the Morehead City Marlins at Big Rock Stadium.

Playing its 50th game of the year, Wilson tumbled to a Coastal Plain League-worst 16-34 overall and 7-15 in second half play, while Morehead City jumped to 9-11 in second-half play and 22-26 in all games.

Smith, out of North Carolina A&T State University, guided his sixth home run out of the ballpark in the ninth inning, which brings him to within one of Shane Shepard’s team-leading seven.

But other than that, the Tobs’ bats were kept at bay by Morehead City starter left-hander Heath Mitchum. In a complete-game performance, Mitchum had a shutout brewing in the ninth before Smith broke it up with his two-run shot.

Wilson trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, but the Marlins doubled the margin with four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Jackson Ware. The hosts tacked on two more in the eighth to lead 10-0.

Cody Smith was the losing pitcher for Wilson, allowing six hits over 523 innings. He struck out six and walked six. After Monday’s game, the Tobs, as a pitching staff, have walked 307 batters and struck out 312.

Wilson continues the final full week of the CPL regular season Tuesday night on the road as the guest of the Holly Springs Salamanders.
