Leaving zero doubt from the opening tip Monday night, the Wilson Prep boys basketball team put up 36 points in the opening quarter alone and knocked down 12 3-pointers in a 93-63 rout of Thomas Academy of Lake Waccamaw in the opening round of the Carolina Athletic Association for Schools of Choice playoffs.
As the No. 1 seed in its four-team pod, WPA won its fifth straight contest to improve to 21-5 overall. The Tigers will host Thales Academy of Rolesville on Wednesday at 6:30.
Senior Tyronne Whitaker had half of Wilson Prep’s 3-pointers, making six on his way to a 22-point showing. Whitaker grabbed four rebounds, had four steals and handed out four assists. Senior Righetous Tomlin had 14 points and sophomore Nasir Blackston finished with 12.
Thomas Academy pulled within 11 at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Tigers closed on a 30-11 run. Wilson Prep only attempted five foul shots, making three.
