Senior Renzo Cieza was the top runner again for his Hunt High boys cross-country team at the 3-A Big East Conference championship meet last week, making him this week’s Thomas Law Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week.
Renzo ran the 5-kilometer course at Red Oak Middle in 17 minutes, 7 seconds to finish second overall, 23 seconds behind winner Jordan Richardson of Northern Nash. It was the third-best career time for the Hunt senior, who helped the Warriors tie for second place in the meet. Earlier this season, Renzo won the boys race at the Wilson County Championship meet.
The son of Carolina and Brendan Hurley of Lucama, Renzo has a 4.58 weighted GPA and is ranked 18th in his senior class at Hunt, where he takes a full International Baccalaureate course load. In addition to running indoor track in the winter and outdoor track in the spring, Renzo is a member of the school’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). He is also in the Hunt chapter of National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society as well as Club UNIFY and Science Club, for which he served as secretary last year.
Renzo was nominated for Boys State and Governor’s School last summer. He serves as a volunteer for the Tobacco Farm Life Museum in Kenly and lends a hand to events at Rock Ridge and Lucama elementary schools.
