Kamare Watson capped his freshman season in a big way last week for the Beddingfield High cross-country team, making him this week’s Thomas Law Attorneys Student-Athlete of the Week.
Kamare finished 18th out of 185 runners in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2-A championship meet Saturday at Ivey Redmon Park in Kernersville with a time of 16 minutes, 51.71 seconds. He was the first freshman to cross the finish line.
Kamare, who won the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference title, finished third at the 2-A East Regional meet with a career-best time of 16:26.
The son of April Dublin and Maurice Watson of Wilson, Kamare has a B average so far in his first semester of high school. He plans to run indoor track this winter and outdoor track and field in the spring.
Last spring as an eighth-grader at Darden Middle, Kamare won the Tricounties Athletic Conference and Wilson County championships.
He is active at Bread of Life Family Worship Church in Wilson and played for the Eastern Carolina Warriors AAU basketball team of Rocky Mount.
