[The woman] begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
- Mark 7:26 (NIV)
Seventy years ago, at the age of two, I lay strapped to a board for several months. This was the only form of medical help available to those who had infantile paralysis, or polio. Even though the doctor gave me little hope of walking, my mother’s faithfulness and relentless prayer life helped to restore my health.
Mark 7:24-30 reminds me how faithful the woman was whose daughter was possessed by a demon. Not only did she beg Jesus for healing, but she was persistent. The grateful mother returned to her home to find her daughter well and everything in good order.
I am inspired by the examples of these two women — my mother and the Syrophoenician woman — who were persistent and strong in their faith. God yearns for us to seek strength through prayer as we encounter difficulties as well as joys. I realize that God loves each of us, no matter how our situation turns out. We, in turn, can express our gratitude for God’s strength and presence with us.
