PEMBROKE — Team Tank, a club team with wrestlers from Wilson, Wayne, Nash and Wake counties, won the team competition at the second North Carolina Pride Open, held March at UNC Pembroke.
Tanner Klutey, a senior at Hunt High, was the champion of the 220-pound weight class while Beddingfield senior Patrick King and Fike sophomore Taylor Gay placed second at 160 pounds and 126 pounds, respectively.
Also placing from Wilson in the youth division were Barrett Klutey, who was second in the 12-under 105-pound class; Jacob Farmer (second, 12U 95 pounds), David Royer (second, heavyweight) and Brayden Waniorek (second, 8U 75 pounds).
Winning championships in two weight classes each were brothers Timothy and Christian Decatur of Goldsboro. Timothy, who won at 126 and 132 in the high school division, and Christian, 106 and 113 in high school, helped start Team Tank a year ago. Both brothers wrestle for Backyard Wrestling Club in Wilson at The SPOT under the direction of Jake Brown, who helped coach the Team Tank at the N.C. Pride OPen, along with John Messer, a former standout wrestler at Fike High.
