You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
- Psalm 139:13 (NIV)
At two weeks old, my daughter, Rebecca, had open-heart surgery to repair a rare congenital defect. For the next two months, she fought for her life. Every day was a struggle. During that time, I learned to rely on God for both my strength and my daughter’s health.
Life is precious, fragile, and sometimes too short; but our will to live is strong. God has created our intricate bodies to be strong and resilient.
Over the next year, Rebecca continued her battle for life. A common cold put her back in the hospital for weeks. Once again I called out to God to give both of us strength, and God faithfully provided it.
Our Creator knows the struggles we face. God has known us from the moment our lives began and knows us better than anyone. We can fight through life’s challenges on our own, or we can battle them with God. God longs for us to call for the strength we need to fight our battles. God, who knows our inmost being, is always ready to give us the strength we need.
