Matt Whitley, Southern Bank vice president and city executive, partnered with the Wilson Education Partnership to help fund two additional mini-grants. The WEP funded 26 of 71 grants totaling more than $20,000. When Whitley heard about the number of grants, he decided to reach out and help. Two grants totaling $1,178 were funded. Michelle Newton, a fifth-grade science teacher at Wells Elementary, received a grant to purchase a human torso model for the science classes, and Fike High School counselor Dana Lee received a grant to attend a state counseling professional development workshop. Joining Whitley to make the surprise announcements was WEP President Sheryl Creech.
