An Elm City man faces an attempted murder charge after Wilson police say he shot a man during a Saturday dispute at the Sheetz gas station.

Officers were dispatched to a 4:33 p.m. call to Sheetz on Forest Hills Road regarding a shooting. Police arrived and learned the victim, 20-year-old Joshua J. Batts, had been taken to Wilson Medical Center.

The suspect, who was later identified as 38-year-old Keith L. Jones Jr., ran away, according to Wilson Police Sgt. Steve Stroud.

Jones is accused of shooting Batts in the “abdominal area,” police said. Batts was transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for further treatment.

Witnesses and video surveillance of the area indicated that a fight between Batts and Jones took place in the Sheetz parking lot, police said. During the altercation, Jones shot Batts, Stroud said.

“The suspect and the victim are known to each other and the incident was not random,” Stroud added.

Jones turned himself in at the police department on Monday. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He also faces a charge of causing injury to personal property in an unrelated case, police said.

Jones received a $50,000 secured bond.
