ROCKY MOUNT — Bolstered by the return of senior quarterback Sean Jones, the Beddingfield High varsity football team engaged in a display of fireworks with new 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opponent Nash Central on Friday night.

Jones found sophomore running back Jalil Hutcherson on a pair of touchdown passes, the latter coming with 1:22 remaining to pull the Bruins to within the final score. However, Beddingfield couldn’t recover the ensuing onside kick, sending the Bruins to their first EPC loss with a 40-33 setback.

Beddingfield dropped to 5-4 overall and 2-1 within the EPC as Nash Central climbed to 7-2 in all games and 2-1 within the league. Coupled with Beddingfield’s loss, SouthWest Edgecombe’s 21-7 win over Farmville Central leaves the Cougars as the sole unbeaten in the conference.

The Bruins took the lead in the third quarter, using a blocked punt and recovery in the end zone from junior Zach Adams. A missed two-point conversion left Beddingfield up 26-20. Yet Nash Central answered with three consecutive touchdowns to take a 40-26 lead with 2:56 remaining.

Beddingfield received the second-half kickoff and used the first Jones-to-Hutcherson connection to tie the game at 20. Nash Central threatened to extend a 20-14 lead before halftime, but Beddingfield answered with a goal-line stand.

The Bruins will observe Senior Night next week at home against Farmville Central in Bruins Stadium.
