John Taylor shared this Associated Press wire photo of a Jan. 6, 1974 train derailment in Lucama. Forty-six of the 135 train cars were left in a twisted mass of metal and one person was injured when a boxcar plowed into a home, according to the Associated Press photo caption. The train was en route to Rocky Mount from Florence, South Carolina, and was loaded with phosphate, pulp board and various consumer goods. The Wilson Times is publishing historical photos of Wilson County life and landmarks in this space each day.
