Gov. Jim Hunt addresses thousands of spectators on July 14, 1984 in Manteo as part of commemorative activities celebrating the 400th anniversary of England's first attempt to colonize the New World. Hunt, Princess Anne of the British royal family and many other dignitaries attended the events on Roanoke Island, site of the famed “Lost Colony.” Hunt, of Wilson County, celebrated his 80th birthday on Tuesday. Times reporter Drew C. Wilson took this photo while working for The Coastland Times in 1984. The Wilson Times is publishing historical photos of Wilson County life and landmarks in this space each day.
