SNOW HILL — Through one half Friday night, the Greene Central High varsity football team had its 4-A opposition in Winterville South Central firmly under control.
The 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference Rams carried a 14-0 advantage into halftime, but 18 unanswered points from South Central, a 4-A member of the split 3-A/4-A Eastern Carolina Conference allowed it to rally for an 18-14 decision at James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex.
Jemere Artis supplied the go-ahead touchdown for South Central with 2:40 remaining, capping the rally.
Sophomore Cornelius Smith scored on a 19-yard run in the first half for Greene Central, with the lead expanding to 14-0 on a 34-yard TD pass to senior receiver Saquan Conner.
But South Central came to life in the second half on a 49-yard pass play to Jeremy Lewis. The two-point conversion failed, but Artis plowed in from a yard out to pull the Falcons within 14-12 entering the fourth quarter.
Greene Central visits Charles B. Aycock next Friday.
