Rams start strong in 5-1 ECC win

SNOW HILL — The first four hitters collected hits in the bottom of the first inning and the host Greene Central High varsity baseball team proceeded to a 5-1 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference victory against Kinston on Friday night.

The Rams evened their conference record at 4-4 going into the final week of the regular season and stand 8-13 overall.

Greene Central trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Matt Mewborn doubled, Jackson Batchelor singled, Tyler Horner doubled and Justin Woolard singled to account for three runs.

Rams pitcher Hunter Moore, a junior right-hander, then blanked the Vikings the last six innings. Moore spaced six hits and five walks while striking out six.

Mewborn batted 3 for 3 with two doubles to spearhead Greene Central’s 10-hit offensive. Batchelor and Woolard each rapped two hits and drove in two runs.

Greene Central continues conference play at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday against South Lenoir.
