Martin Luther King Day
This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Ecumenical Prayer Breakfast will feature Bobbie D. Jones, mayor of Princeville, as speaker.
The breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the Darden Alumni Center, 1600 Lipscomb Road.
This is the 24th year of the annual breakfast, where community members gather to honor the civil rights leader.
Jones was elected mayor of Princeville in 2013. Princeville, the oldest town incorporated by African-Americans in the country, has endured many hardships in recent years because of devastating flooding. A native of Edgecombe County, Jones served in the U.S. Marines and is principal at C.S. Brown High School in Hertford County.
A praise ensemble from New Vester Missionary Baptist Church will provide entertainment Monday morning.
At the breakfast, the winner of the “I Have a Dream for Wilson” essay contest will be introduced. Scholarship winners will also be named.
Michael Charrington, Wilson Martin Luther King Commission chairman, said the event usually sells out with around 400 participants.
Charrington said the event is an opportunity to fellowship with people in the community.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from the city of Wilson’s human relations office, at the Darden Alumni Center or from members of the Wilson Martin Luther King Commission. Call Charrington at 252-315-2454 for more information or to get tickets.
• On Thursday, the film “Wilmington on Fire” will be screened at 6:30 p.m. at the Boykin Center. The documentary chronicles a 1898 race riot in Wilmington. Admission is free. The city of Wilson and the Wilson Historical Association are collaborating on this event.
• The Share the Dream Talent Show is 6 p.m. Saturday at Greenfield School. State MLK Commissioner Jacquie Jeffers said she planned the event to bring community members together and allow them to share their talents while informing people about King’s dream of peace and diversity.
