BAILEY — The pottery demonstration and sale at Finch Pottery continues an annual tradition at its Nov. 11 Open House in Bailey. The open house runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 50 potters will display and sell their stoneware and porcelain creations, with sculpture, jewelry and bluebird nesting boxes also for sale. More pottery-making demonstrations will take place than in years past, including both hand-built and wheel-thrown pottery. There will also be opportunities to glaze your own raku vase sessions led by Dan Finch.

Kids can take advantage of face painting as well as Santa’s Workshop, an area filled with $3, $5 and $10 pottery items for children to purchase. The items are donated to the children’s shopping area by potters taking part in the open house.

“This is an environment you don’t see anywhere else in the state for potters,” said Dan Finch’s wife, Amy. “There is a camaraderie, and our potters work together. We provide a giving, caring, encouraging environment.”

Finch added that many potters have developed friendships over the years, and some reserve side-by-side booths so that they can cover for each other if they need to take quick breaks.

Music will be provided during the open house by Kenly-based Southern Star Band. For the third year, Virginia musician Rebecca Bryant will also be playing.

The pottery open house, which always draws a large crowd of shoppers, also features food vendors, including $1 popcorn with proceeds going toward charity.

“Dan’s philosphy is that he hopes people feel better when leaving this place than when they came in,” Finch said. “I think this event does that.”
