Playing in its home opener, the Wilson Post 13 American Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader from Edenton Post 40 on Sunday afternoon at Beddingfield High.

Wilson won the scheduled seven-inning contest that counted in the Area I conference standings 6-0 before winning the nonconference game, scheduled for five innings, 7-1 in the finale.

Beddingfield’s Austin Slate was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing just one hit over four innings for Post 13 (2-1, 1-1 Area I West).

He struck out six and walked four.

Offensively, Ty Narron and Slate each had two hits. Slate drove in two runs, while his Beddingfield teammate, Tyler Godwin, was 1 for 3 with a run batted in.

Narron threw the final three innings and allowed three hits.

Greenfield’s Jacob Wiggs went the distance in the second game, allowing four hits. Wiggs struck out two and had a walk.

Slate lashed a two-run triple for Wilson as part of a 2-for-3 showing. Kevin Braswell was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and tallied a sacrifice fly. Mann Farmer of Beddingfield was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Post 13 visits Manteo on Saturday to face the Dare County Hammerheads in a doubleheader at Manteo High.

SATURDAY’S GAME

BEAR GRASS — Wilson launched its season with a 9-6 road loss to Bear Grass on Saturday evening.

Post 13 clung to a 5-2 lead until Bear Grass struck for two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and three in the fifth. The victors added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Wilson plated a pair of runs in the first, three in the fourth and one in the seventh.

Nathan Woodard led the Post 13 offense, batting 3 for 3 with a double, a run batted in, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Dane Reynolds was the losing pitcher in relief of Woodard, the starter. Farmer got the final out.

Wilson was victimized by seven unearned runs. Woodard allowed but one hit in a four-inning stint, but issued five of his six walks in the bottom of the first — when Bear Grass scored twice.
