Post 13 clipped by Fuquay-Varina in opener

FUQUAY-VARINA — The Wilson Post 13 American Legion baseball team posted a 11-7 advantage in hits Sunday afternoon, but stranded 13 base runners in opening its 2019 season with a 2-1 loss to the host Fuquay-Varina Post 116 Nationals of the Area I West Division.

Post 116 snapped a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and relief pitching kept Wilson scoreless the last two innings despite allowing three hits and  a walk.

Both teams plated a run in the fifth. Post 13 struck when Jackson Terry drove in Dom Gaetano.

Mason Lee paced the Wilson offense of head coach Noah Edens with a 3-for-4 showing. Gaetano and Tanner Sullivan each collected two hits for Wilson.

Right-hander Alexander Ortiz, the third Wilson pitcher, took the loss. Right-hander Trevor Mills started and worked three scoreless innings. Matt Raynor, a right-hander, allowed one run in a two-inning stint.

Dominick Decole hurled the first five innings for Post 116.

Post 13 opens Area I East play Tuesday at Farmville Central against Farmville Post 151.
