Wilson police are investigating the Monday evening death of a 16-year-old boy.

Officers were dispatched to the 4100 block of Huntsmoor Lane regarding a medical emergency shortly before 7 p.m., according to Sgt. Steve Stroud.

Police said friends of 16-year-old Rodshawn Barnes had already taken him to Wilson Medical Center. While officers were at the hospital, they discovered the teen had suffered from a gunshot wound, Stroud said.

Barnes was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital, officials said.

“The Wilson Police Department’s thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Barnes’ family during this difficult time,” Stroud said in a written statement.

Police have not released the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death, nor have they classified the incident as a homicide.

The police report indicates the case is a “death investigation.” The report also states the incident happened at the victim’s home.

Stroud said police are actively investigating the case.
