Police say three people lost their lives after a car caught fire in a two-vehicle crash during the New Year's holiday weekend.
Wilson police and firefighters were called to a collision at the 400 block of Hines Street near its intersection with Lodge Street at 11:42 p.m. Saturday.
One vehicle involved in the crash came to rest off the road and was engulfed in flames while the other car was in the road with major front-end damage, Capt. Kendra Howell said Monday.
Three people in the car that caught fire were pronounced dead at the scene, Howell said. Medical examiners were still working to identify the victims Monday and police did not release the names of those involved.
The driver of the other vehicle sustained serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
Police are still investigating the wreck's cause and have enlisted the Wilson Police Department's Strategic Traffic Enforcement Patrol, criminal investigation division, forensic unit and victim assistance advocate in the effort.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
