Wilson Christian Academy senior McKenna Griffin has seen the rebuild of the Lady Chargers after the school’s 2016 North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A championship game appearance. In 2017, Griffin’s sophomore season, WCA made it to the quarterfinals. Last season, the Lady Chargers made it to the semifinals, and this season, they’re headed back to the semifinals. But this time, WCA is hoping to advance back to the title game after a 51-33 win over Ramseur Faith Christian on Thursday night at Springfield Middle.

“We’re a totally different team,” Griffin said. “We have more potential than we did. It’s very exciting, but last year we did and we got too excited and came out slow.”

Griffin came out and had a team-high 12 points, including six of the team’s 18 points in the second quarter. The second quarter was when the Lady Chargers (23-6), the No. 1 seed from the East, separated from the Lady Eagles (13-14) with an 18-4 run to give them a 28-12 halftime lead. Junior Kayla Tant also added six of her eight points in the quarter.

But Wilson Christian head coach Brian Trull warned his team that Faith Christian, the fourth and final seed from the West region, would make a run. The Lady Eagles came within eight points in the fourth before junior Olivia Vick put in a couple layups to seal the game. Vick bucketed nine points.

“I thought we handled it well and we didn’t panic, but I didn’t like our energy when we came out in the second half,” Trull said. “But as we saw that they were going to fight, we kind of understood and started to pull back away.”

The Lady Chargers will now face Wilmington Christian on Friday night, and Trull expects it will be a fight.

But, it feels good to be back in the semifinals.
