Why I Teach

Vickie Pollard, sixth-grade math teacher at Toisnot Middle School, is featured in this week’s Why I Teach. “Public service has always been the most special thing that you can do. The next special thing is to teach someone how to read and how to do math and to be self sufficient. I feel like I’m a part of something special. That is why I teach.”

First Teaching Position: Exceptional children’s teacher at Nashville Elementary (Nash-Rocky Mount Schools)

Total Years Teaching: 29 years

College Attended: Graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan University with a bachelor’s degree in intermediate education

Favorite Quote and Why: “The expert at anything was once a beginner.” — Helen Hayes. This is my favorite quote because students think that we know everything, but we were once sixth-grade students too.

Student Perspective: Ms. Pollard is a nice teacher and expresses herself and explains things so that we can understand everything better. She is a nice teacher. I am getting good grades because she inspires me. — Jayson Hernandez

Student Perspective: Ms. Pollard is a great math teacher because she supports us as students and helps us understand math. She helps all of us and encourages us to pass. This past semester I’ve been doing good in her class. — Triston Dew
