Washington pushed across a run in the top of the eighth inning Friday night and held on to beat host Beddingfield 2-1 to take over first place in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference varsity softball race.
The Lady Bruins, with their second loss in three games, dropped to 15-3 overall and 6-2 and into a tie for second place in the EPC with North Johnston. The Pam Pack, who will visit North Johnston in the final regular-season game Friday, departed 14-5 overall and 7-1 in league games.
Savannah Pierce scored Beddingfield’s lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Lady Bruins, who have won or shared six straight EPC titles, will play at Farmville Central on Tuesday and host SouthWest Edgecombe in Thursday’s regular-season finale.
