Ranked No. 9 among NCAA Division II Southeast Region teams this week, the Barton College men’s soccer team yielded a pair of second-half goals and tumbled 2-1 against Francis Marion (South Carolina) University on the Barton College Complex pitch Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs lost for just the second time in eight matches, while Francis Marion departed with a 4-4 record. Barton returns to Conference Carolinas competition with a trip to Franklin Springs, Georgia, to oppose Emmanuel at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Francis Marion knocked in the decisive goal in the 84th minute. Jonas Dovland weaved his way along the right side and connected on a shot into the lower left corner of the Barton goal.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Senior Tolly Beatson scored his fifth goal in working the give-and-go with sophomore Pol Monells. The run ended with Beatson’s shot in the upper right corner.
Francis Marion drew even in the second minute of the second half on an unassisted goal from Rory Monks, who made a couple of moves past Bulldogs defenders.
Barton wound up with just nine shots as compared to 32 for Francis Marion. Bulldogs junior goalkeeper Francisco Noguera notched seven saves.
