WALKERTOWN — Wilson Christian has played in two North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A varsity girls basketball championship games since the Lady Chargers last won a state title in 2015. Both times WCA lost to Alamance Christian in the final, including last year.

There’s no need for the Lady Chargers to worry about the Lady Warriors this year. Wilson Christian eliminated Alamance Christian in Thursday’s quarterfinals and returned to the NCCSA 2-A championship game with a 44-30 win over tournament host Gospel Light Christian on Friday.

The Lady Chargers, the No. 1 seed from the East Region, will face West No. 1 Lexington Union Grove Christian in Saturday’s championship game, also at Gospel Light, at 5:30 p.m. Union Grove (25-2) advanced with a 57-40 defeat of West No. 3 Monroe Tabernacle Christian on Friday.

Wilson Christian, now 22-9, down West No. Gospel Light pretty much in the same way it was won most of its games this season — with defense. The Lady Chargers shut down Gospel Light senior captain Faith Blalock in a manner of speaking. Blalock, whom WCA head coach Brian Trull said scored more than 40 points in Gospel Light’s win over Hilltop Christian on Thursday, only scored 17 points Friday.

“It was a great defensive effort and it wasn’t just one player, it was the whole team,” Trull said.

The Lady Chargers broke open what had been a close game in the first quarter by outscoring Gospel Light 17-5 in the second quarter. Seniors Ashley Hartsfield and Madison Carnes led Wilson Christian in scoring with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Carnes added eight rebounds while senior Olivia Vick grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Lea Gossett had three assists.

So, what is different about this Lady Chargers team from the previous two editions that reached the NCCSA championship game?

“Well, we’re very balanced,” Trull said. “I think you don’t know who’s going to score on any given night. We don’t have a lot of size but we defend well.”
