HOOKERTON — State officials say a 42-year-old murder convict has died in an apparent suicide at Maury Correctional Institution on Monday.

Michael Grant was found unresponsive in the inmate dormitory at 3:30 p.m., N.C. Department of Public Safety spokesman Jerry Higgins said in a Monday evening release. Grant was pronounced dead at 4:08 p.m. after prison medical staff and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.

Grant was convicted of first-degree murder in Pender County in 2013 and was serving a life sentence. Department of Public Safety records for Grant list 15 inmate infractions, including fighting on Oct. 20 and assaulting a person with a weapon on Dec. 28.
