HOOKERTON — State officials say a 42-year-old murder convict has died in an apparent suicide at Maury Correctional Institution on Monday.
Michael Grant was found unresponsive in the inmate dormitory at 3:30 p.m., N.C. Department of Public Safety spokesman Jerry Higgins said in a Monday evening release. Grant was pronounced dead at 4:08 p.m. after prison medical staff and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him.
Grant was convicted of first-degree murder in Pender County in 2013 and was serving a life sentence. Department of Public Safety records for Grant list 15 inmate infractions, including fighting on Oct. 20 and assaulting a person with a weapon on Dec. 28.
Maury Correctional is a close-custody and medium-security state prison in rural Greene County with a capacity of 1,504 male inmates and a staff of 599. It is located near Greene Correctional Institution, a 616-capacity minimum-custody state facility.
