Behind the strength of a four-run bottom of the eighth inning, the Carolina Mudcats roared back from a three-run deficit to claim a 6-5 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash in the opening night of the 2018 Carolina League season in Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats were outhit 14-11, but all except one player in their starting lineup — star prospect Keston Hiura — produced one hit.
Catcher Max McDowell, right fielder Clint Coulter and shortstop Luis Aviles Jr. all had two hits. Coulter and McDowell each doubled. Hiura had a rough introduction to the Single-A Advanced ranks, going 0 for 5 with three strikeouts.
Nattino Diplan won in relief for Carolina, working the eighth inning and allowing three hits. Jon Olczak, a right-hander from N.C. State, entered in the ninth for the save.
Zach Thompson took the loss for Winston-Salem.
The teams continue the series Friday at 7.
