Freshman Pol Monells notched his first collegiate hat trick Saturday afternoon and helped the Barton College men’s soccer team return to the win column with a 3-2 victory over Emmanuel College at Barton Outdoor Athletic Complex.

Barton, which won for the first time in seven matches, improved to 3-9-1 and secured its first NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas win at 1-6-1. Emmanuel dropped to 4-3-3 and 3-2-2 within the league. The Lions are playing a Conference Carolinas schedule and matches will count in the standings for league opponents, but Emmanuel remains ineligible for postseason play as it attempts to navigate the Div. II membership process.

Monells was assisted twice in the first off by junior Tolly Beatson, putting away finishes in the 22nd and 28th minutes. In the 22nd, Beatson and Monells engaged in a give-and-go at the top of the 18-yard box, with Beatson providing the finishing touch to Monells for the goal. In the 28th minute, Monells collected the rebound of a Beatson free kick off an Emmanuel defender and slammed it in, putting Barton up 2-0. Emmanuel halved the margin before halftime, using a corner kick from Nico Becker. Becker’s service found a wide open Channing Park in the box, and Barton went into halftime with a 2-1 edge.

Monells finished off another Beatson rebound in the 63rd. Beatson took a shot towards the right post, but Monells gathered the rebound and sent it past the keeper to complete the hat trick.

Emmanuel put away a second corner in the 89th, this one from Martin Mitreski. Blair Springhall had the service.

The Lions had the edge in corners 7-2, but Barton senior keeper Jens Madsen Hordvik tallied six saves. Barton was narrowly outshot 18-16 and took one less shot on frame at 8-7.

“This result will give our team more confidence, and we’ll work to improve as we fight to finish strong and make our conference tournament,” first year head coach Ian McMichael said in a release.

Andy Dunnett finished with four saves for the Lions.

Barton steps out of conference Wednesday to face Shaw University.
