My first thought as I pen this missive is to state as Richard Nixon would say: “Now, let me make this perfectly clear...” that I am well aware that all citizens of this great country are first-generation immigrants or ancestors of immigrants, with the exception of the American Indians. Also, I sincerely welcome Central Americans and all foreigners to this country if they are here legally.

We are bombarded constantly by the news media informing us of the immigration disaster at our southern border. I am reminded of the poem by Emma Lazarus inscribed on the Statue of Liberty’s base with the last lines so often quoted. “Give me your tired, your poor, your humbled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

This poem has been quoted so many times it seems that many of our citizens believe it’s a part of our Constitution and law of the land with a literal meaning that a foreigner can merely walk across our borders and be a part of our society. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This sonnet, a 12-line poem, does not leave much room for Ms. Lazarus to expound or explain the exact implications of her thoughts. I have my doubts that today she would believe hundreds of thousands of foreigners would be allowed to crash our borders without regard to our immigration laws. This very poem was dedicated to the immigrants who were processed and legally documented at Ellis Island and the port of New York.

The liberal news media is having a field day blaming the present administration for all the woes brought on by disregarding foreign lawbeakers at our borders. This problem is not new by any stretch of the imagination. It has worsened because Congress and previous administrations have refused to deal with it. We are now paying for the sins of our fathers.

I will be the first to admit that there’s suffering among the foreigners desiring to emigrate to this country. However, it is physically and fiscally impossible for this nation to accept all the world’s population that desires citizenship here. I must also say that these people were forewarned not to come to this country en masse, but they disregarded this warning and were encouraged by Trump-haters for the sole purpose of potential liberal voters and embarrassing the present administration.

This immigration problem will not be solved until this country’s immigration laws are enforced. We must not give in to the socialist AOC and the rest of her “ Squad” and the remaining socialist liberals opting for open borders, which will be the ruination of this great nation.
