DURHAM — The Wilson Prep boys basketball team emerged with the Tri-Capital Conference tournament championship Saturday in last-second fashion after Micah Buck’s layup with 2.6 seconds remaining lifted the Tigers to a 41-39 victory over Thales Academy.
The sequence was set up by Troi Shade’s steal with 13.6 seconds to play. Shade passed ahead to Buck, who laid it in. A last-second desperation heave from Thales Academy slammed off the backboard as time ran out.
Dylan Skinner led the Tigers, who are unbeaten through 23 games, with 15 points. Buck added 11 points and five rebounds. Zion White pulled down nine rebounds for the Tigers.
In Thursday’s 40-26 win over Mount Zion in the semifinals, Buck had 14 points.
Wilson Prep will compete in the USA National Prep Basketball Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. from Feb. 28-March 2.
Lady Chargers rally to nip Faith Christian
Host Wilson Christian rallied from an eight-point deficit after three quarters to pull out a 28-27 girls basketball win over Faith Christian of Goldsboro on Friday.
Gracie Farmer scored 11 points to pace the Lady Chargers.
Green keys Chargers’ OT win
David Green fired in 18 points and grabbed six rebounds as the host Wilson Christian boys basketball team needed overtime to knock off Our Lady of Perpetual Help 43-40 on Friday.
Carter Zander added seven points for the Chargers, who got a free throw by Matthew Davis late in regulation to send the game in OT.
Wilson Christian (7-10) will host Bethel Christian in Tuesday’s final game of the season.
