The Springfield girls soccer team used a pair of goals from Susan Guzman and held off a late rally from host Elm City to end the Lady Vikings’ unbeaten season and secure a 3-2 victory in the Tricounties Athletic Conference tournament championship game Wednesday afternoon.
Finishing with a 12-2 record, Springfield, the No. 2 seed from the South Division, picked up its first goal from Madyson Brown. Guzman doubled the margin before halftime and gave the Lady Wildcats a 3-0 advantage before Elm City (13-1) struck twice over the final 15 minutes with goals by Avery Lentz in the 45th and Natalie Capps in the 58th.
In goal, Gabriela Ruelas secured nine saves for Springfield, which received defensive support from Ava Fatzaun, Sammi Mallol, Nevaeh Best, Kamryn Graybeal Cappa Bunn, Mariah Polk, Sydney Graybeal, Natalie Cox and Gretchen Weeks.
Elm City concluded its year as the South Division regular-season champion and Wilson County champions on the basis of regular-season round-robin play.
Wilson Prep reaches TCC championship
Brianna Sigurdson and Lilian Stegall each had two goals and Macaylee Wiggs added another as the Wilson Prep girls soccer team recorded a 5-1 win over Apex Thales Academy in the semifinals of the Tri-Capital Conference tournament on Wednesday.
Owners of an 11-2-1 record, Wilson Prep, the No. 1 seed from the TCC East Division, will face the West’s No. 1 seed in Thales Academy of Rolesville in Thursday’s conference championship game.
Stegall added two assists for the Lady Tigers.
In goal, Emma Etheridge stopped five shots for Wilson Prep.
