Seventy minutes of soccer was insufficient to determine a winner Monday afternoon as Elm City and host Springfield played to a 1-1 tie.

Elm City (1-0-1) scored 45 seconds into play, using a Devin Whitehead goal off an assist from Kevin Moran. The Wildcats replied in the eighth minute, with Gustavo Hernandez supplying the equalizer.

A pair of five-minute overtime periods could not supply a goal.

Harrison Batchelor logged five saves for the Wildcats, who were playing in their season opener.

Elm City plays host to Darden on Wednesday, while Springfield is the guest of Toisnot.

Audrey Earp had 18 service points and five kills Monday afternoon to pace the Springfield girls volleyball team to a 25-9, 25-21, 22-25, 25-10 conquest of Elm City.

Alex Williams finished with six kills for Springfield, which won its season opener. Ashton Frazier had 13 service points and three assists. McKenzie Landers led the Lady Wildcats with six assists.

Jordan Corbett tallid 10 service points for Springfield, which visits Toisnot on Wednesday.

Lake Wilson blanks Red Oak

The Lake Wilson girls tennis team conceded just three games Monday in recording a 9-0 victory over Red Oak.

Prevailing by 8-0 scorelines were Caroline Adkins at No. 2 singles, Kathryn Adkins at No. 3, Anna Katherine Medline at No. 4, Kate Conoley at the No. 5 spot and Sarah Manavi at No. 6.

In doubles, Hill-Kathryn Adkins won 8-0 at No. 1 and Conoley-Zoe Mitchell turned in the same margin at No. 3. Chandler Hill won 8-1 at No. 1 singles, while Caroline Adkins-Manavi turned in an 8-2 decision at No. 2.

Skinner’s 5 goals leads WPA in rout

Dylan Skinner pumped in five goals and Jerome Thomas added two more to lead the Wilson Preparatory Academy boys soccer team to a 10-1 win over Winterville Charter.

Requiring just 50 minutes to get the win, the Tigers (8-4), unbeaten in seven conference encounters, also picked up goals from Taylor Howard, Zachary Mobley and Justin Ellison.

Evan Gregory had two assists, with Howard, Mobley and Skinner notching one helper.

Christian Bullock made two saves in goal for WPA, which visits North East Carolina Prep on Wednesday.
