Speight survived a game effort by host Elm City on Wednesday as the Lady Cougars held on 30-28 for their ninth girls basketball win without a loss.

Daneesha Briggs pumped in 13 of her game-high points for Speight in the second while Reji Pender added seven points. Mesha Strickland’s 11 points led the Lady Vikings (3-6), who fought back from a 12-7 halftime deficit, while Connie Pleasants scored seven.

The Lady Cougars look for win No. 10 on Thursday at Toisnot while the Lady Vikings host Springfield.

Pittman helps Vikings past Cougars

Drew Pittman’s 23 points helped the Elm City basketball team down visiting Speight 57-44 on Wednesday.

Lavon Dickens and Devin Brown complemented Pittman with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Vikings, who moved to 6-3. Cris Atkinson scored 19 points and Micah Sherrod bucketed 15 points for the Cougars.

Hawks end Darden’s undefeated streak

The host Toisnot boys basketball team toppled Darden from the unbeaten ranks by holding on for a 52-49 victory Wednesday. The Hawks owned a 29-18 halftime lead.

The outcome left both teams with 8-1 records and tied for first place in the Tricounties Conference South Division. They have split this season’s meetings.

Sparking Toisnot was Jahmar Jones with 19 points and five assists. Caleb Willingham tossed in 13 points and E.L. Avent supplied nine points and seven rebounds.

The Hawks welcome Speight on Thursday.

Forest Hills routs West Edgecombe

The Forest Hills girls basketball team overwhelmed West Edgecombe, 38-9, Wednesday.

Jamaria Freeman and Kaitlyn Adams each scored 11 points for Forest Hills. Ti’Asia Taylor chipped in with 10 points and Jahiah Ruffin had five.
