Wilson City Little League’s hopes for a third North Carolina Little League District 6 age-group title were dashed Wednesday as South Durham erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to down Wilson 8-3 in the Ages 8-10 championship game at Southern Bank Stadium.

South Durham finished the tournament unbeaten in four games. Wilson, which lost its opener, clawed its way back with four straight victories in the losers bracket before bowing. Had Wilson won, there would have been another game Thursday. WCLL won Ages 8-9 and 9-11 titles earlier this week.

South Durham tagged Wilson starter C.J. Summerlin for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jack Bolte stroked an RBI double and then scored on Jakub Mudd’s two-out single.

Summerlin settled down and held South Durham scoreless in its next three at-bats, helped by an inning-ending double play turned by shortstop Brayden Parker, second baseman Daylon Hendricks and first baseman Seth Scott in the third.

Wilson got going against South Durham starting pitcher Peter Hoffman in the top of the fourth when Maddox Deans and William Doll connected on consecutive singles to start the frame. South Durham’s right fielder let Doll’s hit go by him, allowing Deans to score and Doll to reach third.

Jake Harris singled in Deans with one out and late came around to score when the South Durham center fielder misplayed Summerlin’s single.

The one-run lead wouldn’t last for Wilson as five singles by South Durham coupled with three Wilson errors opened the floodgates.

Doll’s 2-for-3 showing led Wilson while Mudd went 2 for 3 with two RBIs to pace South Durham.

Gillette Baseball Complex will be the site of the final District 6 tournament when the ages 10-12 double-elimination tourney starts Friday. Wilson will open against Person County at 8 p.m. at Southern Bank Stadium.
