The Wilson Christian softball team carried a 6-5 lead into the sixth inning of Friday’s nonconference game with Chocowinity Unity Christian, but the Lady Chargers saw the visitors post four runs in the top of sixth en route to a 9-7 defeat.

Wilson Christian (5-6) of the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A District 3 ranks picked a pair of triples and two RBIs off the bat of junior McKenna Griffin in the loss.

The Chargers, who outhit the Lady Warriors 12-10, got doubles from seniors Casey Bunting, Haley Bunting, Haley Parker, as well as Griffin. However, Unity, unbeaten through 12 games, used three extra-base hits from Kaley Coltrain to help paid its margin. Coltrain doubled twice and slugged a home run en route to a three-RBI showing. Defensively, the Lady Chargers were hampered by four errors.

Haley Bunting pitched the distance in the loss, allowing 10 hits. She struck out eight and walked one, with six of her nine runs being earned. Chloe Boyd relieved Unity starter Macy Main and got the win in relief, getting the final out of the fourth inning. She allowed seven hits, struck out three and didn’t allow a walk
