Wilson City Little League will see a familiar opponent when the North Carolina Little League Ages 8-9 State Tournament convenes for its championship game Thursday night in Southern Bank Stadium.

After dispatching Lake Norman 7-1 in Tuesday night’s winners bracket final, Lake Norman re-emerged as the final obstacle to Wilson’s state championship aspirations by excusing Kernersville 10-0 in four innings Wednesday. Therefore, undefeated Wilson and Lake Norman will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday. A second contest will follow, if necessary.

Versus Kernersville, Lake Norman posted six runs in the second and four more in the third to end the game early via the 10-run rule.

Lake Norman supplied 10 hits, with four players notching two hits. Trendyn Motley was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a pair of triples, hitting a two-run triple in the second and supplying another run-scoring hit in the fourth.

Austin Baxter went the distance for Lake Norman, allowing three hits to go along with three strikeouts and one walk.

Wilson will enter the championship game having not committed an error in victories over Myers Park, Winston-Salem and Lake Norman.

Tuesday’s victory represented the first time Wilson was scored on in the tournament, encompassing 13 2/3 innings of shutout baseball.
