KENLY — The Eastern Plains Conference champion North Johnston High varsity softball team slammed eight extra-base hits in strutting into the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs with a 16-0 rout of visiting Bertie on Saturday.
The Lady Panthers, seeded No. 2 among 32 East Region qualifiers, boosted their record to 25-1 in defeating a second foe from the Northeastern Coastal Conference. North Johnston has outscored No. 15 Bertie and Hertford County 41-0 in the first two rounds.
The Lady Panthers’ next test will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against No. 10 South Lenoir, No. 2 from the Eastern Carolina Conference.
Bertie exited with a 12-11 record.

Greene Central’s comeback quelled
RANDLEMAN — Despite a valiant comeback bid in the top of the seventh inning, the Greene Central High varsity baseball team’s season ended in the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs with a 4-3 loss to host PAC 7 Conference champion Randleman on Saturday evening.
The Rams, seeded No. 19 among the 32 East Region qualifiers, trailed 4-0 going into the top of the final inning.
The No. 3 Tigers plated their four runs in the fourth, converting four Greene Central errors into three unearned runs.
Travis Mewborn doubled and singled to trigger the Rams attack.
Losing pitcher Dylan Benton, Tyler Horner and A.J. Dupree each singled.
Randleman pitcher Trey Cooper posted 16 strikeouts. Dominick Poole and Tyler Yates each collected two hits.
The Tigers host No. 6 Midway in the third round with a 22-5 record. The Rams, who finished in the middle of the Eastern Carolina Conference pack, closed 12-11.
