What a difference a year makes for the Wilson Christian varsity girls basketball team as it relates to Sanford Grace Christian.
And not in a good way.
After easily handling the Lady Crusaders a season ago, WCA found itself in a 22-12 halftime hole Tuesday night before rallying to within one posesssion in the fourth quarter. However, the Lady Chargers could get no closer and walked away with a 39-34 loss.
“We kind of came out a little shell shocked,” WCA head coach Brian Trull said. “We beat them handily last year, and they came out physical defensively.”
Wilson Christian (1-2) made adjustments in the second half after Grace Christian hit five 3-point field goals in the opening 16 minutes. WCA extended its pressure and picked up two key baskets from Kayla Tant in the last 2:10. Tant’s 3-pointer made it a one-possession game with 2:10 remaining, while her long jumper with 90 seconds to go made it a four-point contest. However, WCA got no closer.
McKenna Griffin finished with 14 points and eight rebounds as Olivia Vick finished with four assists.
Shay Brumbles led the Crusaders (2-0) with 17 points.
The Lady Chargers are at Cape Fear Christian on Friday.
