Barton College’s losing streak in softball stretched to five games as visiting North Greenville swept a doubleheader, winning the first game 2-1 and the second 6-3, from the Lady Bulldogs on Friday afternoon at Jeffries Field.

Barton, now 18-24 overall, dipped to 4-12 in Conference Carolinas play and is hanging onto the eighth — and final — spot for the conference tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will host Southern Wesleyan, which trails Barton by a game in the standings, on Saturday for a twinbill.

In the first game, Barton’s only run came on back-to-back, two-out doubles by Jessica Onega and Ashton Pegram in the bottom of the seventh. With Pegram on second base as the tying run, Makayla Meeks grounded out to North Greenville pitcher Amanda Coffrin to end the game.

Coffrin (16-3) outdueled hard-luck loser Hannah Jones (8-9), who gave up a pair of earned runs in the top of the sixth inning.

In the second game, Barton tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the second as Alison Montague drew a two-out walk, went to second on Taylor Freeman’s single and scored on a wild pitch by NGU starter Mackenzie Dyson.

Another walk to Jordan Blake followed by Sierra Hearp’s single to load the bases before Hannah Jones drew another free pass to bring in Freeman for a 2-1 Barton lead.

The Crusaders reclaimed the lead for good with two runs in the fourth and led 4-2 when Barton added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Onega’s double to right field scored Jones, who singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Teagan Crosby (2-5), the second of four Barton pitchers, took the loss while just pitching the fourth. She gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and one of six Barton errors in the game.
