MOUNT OLIVE — The Barton College softball team was denied a winning regular season in the debut season of head coach Junior Bailey when host University of Mount Olive dominated the second game of an NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas doubleheader by a 13-1 margin on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs ended the regular season with a 24-25 record. They had a shot at a winning record by virtue of a 4-2 win in the opening game on the twinbill.

With a 11-11 conference record, Barton wound up sixth, while Mount Olive claimed fifth place with a 13-9 mark. The Trojans finished 25-27 overall.

In the opener, Barton sophomore Hannah Jones won a pitching duel from Mount Olive’s Karen Foley. Jones (12-8) spaced nine hits while allowing three walks and striking out one. Foley yielded but six hits. She also walked three and struck out one.

The Lady Bulldogs never trailed after striking for two runs in the top of the first inning. Barton upped the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth. Mount Olive answered with its two runs in the bottom of the fifth. However, Barton added a run in the sixth and hung on.

Freshman third baseman Sierra Hearp collected two of Barton’s six singles and drove in a run. Senior catcher Taylor Bowden drove in two runs and sophomore first baseman Samantha Santmyers had an RBI.

Left fielder Sydney Speight, a senior from Beddingfield High, Bowden, senior designated hitter Kelsie Conner and freshman shortstop Taylor Martin had the other Barton hits.

But in the second game, starting Barton sophomore pitcher Makayla Meeks failed to get out of the first inning. She was followed in the circle by senior Carolina Merrill and Hearp.

Mount Olive capped its 12-hit assault with a pinch hit grand slam from Alyssa Pickle.

Barton managed nine hits. Senior center fielder Megan Kelly batted 3 for 3, while junior second baseman Brittany Jacobs went 2 for 3.
